1. Information and raising awareness

Thanks to its national presence, its foundation in French-speaking Switzerland, and its experience of more than 40 years in development co-operation, Enfants du Monde contributes to strengthen the solidarity of the Swiss population with disadvantaged countries through information campaigns and activities.

Enfants du Monde is regularly in contact with the Swiss population. Thanks to stands and workshops to raise awareness, held by collaborators and notably by volunteers, Enfants du Monde can converse with the public and inform regarding topics such as cooperation for development, sustainable development, North-South relations and aid to disadvantaged childhood.

Stand Paléo

Enfants du Monde is collecting signatures for two petitions which are addressed to the Geneva county authorities.

The first one’s purpose is to forbid the prostitution of girls aged 16 to 18 in Geneva; the second’s goal is to obtain access to school for all children until the age of 18, whatever legal status their parents have.

These petitions were launched by the Global March in June 2009.

2. The "Citizenship education" project

During 10 years, from 1998 to 2008, Enfants du Monde has set up a project specifically intended for Swiss children and youth to make them sensitive to North-South issues. Several activities took place such as the animation of thematic camps, the publication of pedagogic learning aid and the organisation and animation of intercultural exchange camps.

From 2009, instead of the raising of awareness of young Swiss people, Enfants du Monde will concentrate on the development of an experience of “citizen education” between partners (SAJ VEYE YO in Haiti, Juna in Burkina Faso and CODAP in Switzerland) and young people from the three above-mentioned countries. The “citizenship” concept or rather “the position a young person can take up on a local or international question as a citizen” will be the main topic between the protagonists.

Intercultural exchange camps

During 10 years, every summer, Enfants du Monde has offered to several dozens of youngsters from 17 to 24 years to share the daily routine of a local partner association and of its young members during three weeks.

For six months, the young Swiss prepared their stay in the developing countries, alternating weekends of training / reflection on North-South relations and on fundraising operations. They also prepared recreational activities for children that were carried out on site in collaboration with local youngsters.

Local partners of Enfants du Monde have been very favourable to these exchange camps, which have allowed the youngsters of their districts, their community or their area, to open up to the world. The recreational activities for disadvantaged children organized by the young Swiss have been well received and stimulating, and have contributed to the strengthening of the community dynamics at the local level.

In total, 24 intercultural exchange camps have made possible the participation of more than 240 youth, supervised by more than 60 people specially trained to be in charge of the group. Since the launching of this activity, camps have been organized in each country where Enfants du Monde is active. Each camp has welcomed between 8 and 10 participants. The first camp in Haïti was organized in 1998.

The last two intercultural exchange camps have been organized in Burkina Faso (2007) and Haiti (2008). The youngsters from the two countries created and presented two plays called "Les Bodras du Burkina" and "La dérive du roi" (The drift of a king).

"Theater in Haïti – The drift of a king

In summer 2008, under the auspices of Enfants du Monde and the haitian association SAJ Veye Yo, 15 young swiss, 1 choreographer, 1 composer, 2 musicians and a stage director went to Haiti. Welcomed by 15 young haitians and their artistic staff, they put on stage a play called “The drift of a king”, presented in front of 600 people in Port-au-Prince.

In spite of the distance and the return to the daily routine, the youngsters from Haïti and Switzerland are still in contact. Their exchanges keep on online through http://haiti2008.uniterre.com. This bloq tells about the great experience they got together in Haiti and about the excitement of the next meeting in Switzerland.

For the first time, the 2008 Haiti camp goes on in 2009 with the venue of SAJ VEYE YO young haitians group.

Thus, the young Haïtians have spent two weeks in Geneva, replaying the play “The drift of a king” in Geneva and in Lutry. More than 800 people assisted.
