Health

Situation in the countries

Problems related to health encountered in the countries where Enfants du Monde has projects are the following:

- focus is placed on illness and its prevention,

- the importance of the process and the context is neglected,

- access to healthcare is limited for a large part of the population,

- interventions are not well coordinated among organisations,

- the low level of resources devoted to health is not used in an optimal way.

Enfants du Monde's approach

Enfants du Monde's embraces as a framework for its activities in health the concept of Health Promotion as defined in the Ottawa Charter of 1986, as a " process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health".

This approach called "Individuals, Families and Communities" goes beyond actions oriented to illness (cure or prevent) but also assures that resources (human, technical, legislative, financial, etc.) are mobilized for good health. From this perspective, and linked to the education sector, Enfants du Monde favours programmes to strengthen individual and collective competencies.

Enfants du Monde thus orients its maternal and child health programmes as per the following elements:

-  based on the Ottawa Charter as a framework of analysis and action,

- to assure within the health system a community approach that takes into account the contributions of individuals, families and communities to improve maternal and child health (this approach has been elaborate within a mandate given by the World Health Organisation),

- to develop experiences of education in health, by integrating new knowledge into existing knowledge in the communities,

- to support the production of educational material adapted to local realities,

- to strengthen reinforce the local, regional and national health planning structures.
