Basic indicators:
Enfants du Monde projects in Colombia
Educational program for teachers Background: Colombia is the country of great disparities. The gap between rich and poor is at the back of the large number of marginal groups. Illiteracy is primarily spread amongst the indigenous, women and the rural populations. As much as 21% of the indigenous people do not have access to schooling The project: Antioquia public University in Medellín offers a Master degree in “Pedagogy of the Text” (PdT), This method is widely recognized at global level and was worked out by the current education team of Enfants du Monde. It targets education professionals from various Latin American countries, who work for the most vulnerable populations, from a social and economic perspective, such as youngsters, indigenous peoples, women or small farmers.
The partner association: The project is implemented in association with Antioquia public University in Medellín and Educational Corporation (CLEBA), a Colombian non-governmental organisation specializing in basic education and alphabetisation of adults. CLEBA has a long history of cooperation with Enfants du Monde. Set up in 1963, it implements educational programs in Medellín, using the “Pedagogy of the Text” method. Health Promotion training course Background: Maternal and infant mortality rates in countries with low resources are much higher than in rich countries. 1500 women, more than 10, 000 newborns die, every day, of pregnancy or childbirth related complications. 98% of these deaths happen in developing countries. Most of these could be avoided by providing adequate pregnancy and perinatal care, as catered for in the “Individual, Families and Communities” (IFC) Approach of the World Health Organisation (WHO). This approach seeks a cooperation with individuals together with their families and communities for a better maternal and perinatal health care.
The partner: Enfants du Monde works mainly with the PAHO in Latin America with the aim to spread the IFC approach on a regional basis. Created in 1902, PAHO is the oldest international health organisation still active today. Its administration centre is located in Washington DC, it has 27 national offices and 8 associated scientific centres. Its mission is to develop and encourage strategic cooperation between state members and partners with a view to promote equity in health, fighting illness and diseases, quality of life and life expectancy for the people of the Americas. |
